Can you make a living day trading? Yes — but far fewer people do than the internet suggests, and understanding why is the most useful thing a new trader can learn before risking a dollar.

## The honest numbers

Independent research consistently finds that the large majority of people who attempt day trading lose money, and that the share still profitable after several years is small. This isn't discouragement — it's the single most important fact about the job, and anyone who hides it from you is selling something. Most people who try this do not make a living at it.

That cuts both ways, though. "Most people fail" is true of most difficult skills — most people who pick up a guitar never play well, most who start a business close it. It doesn't mean it can't be done. It means you should not *assume* you'll be the exception, and you should structure everything around surviving long enough to find out.

## Why most people who fail, fail

It usually isn't the strategy. It's that they never run one long enough to know whether it works. A bad week arrives, they switch approaches, and six months later they've traded twelve strategies for two weeks each and learned nothing about any of them. They confused activity with progress.

The traders who make it tend to do the opposite: one method, run long enough to produce a real sample, with risk small enough to survive the losing stretches that every method has. Boring, repetitive, measured. It doesn't make good YouTube, which is exactly why the internet is full of the opposite.

## What "making a living" actually requires

Three things, none of them a secret:

- **An edge** — a repeatable way of reading the market that, over a large sample, makes more than it loses. Not a magic setup. A small, consistent advantage, run enough times.
- **Risk management** — the discipline to lose small and never blow up, because you cannot make a living from an account that hit zero. The best traders are risk managers who happen to take trades.
- **Consistency** — doing the same correct thing on the boring days and the scary days, for years. This is the part almost nobody has, and it's the part that separates the people who make a living from the people who had one good month.

## Income isn't a salary

Even for those who succeed, trading income is not a paycheck. There's no base, no floor, no guarantee. A good month can be followed by a flat one. Your income in any period is whatever's left after a run of gains and losses, minus every cost — commissions, fees, data, slippage, tax. Two traders with identical gross results can take home very different amounts depending on their costs. Anyone planning to live on trading income needs a buffer for the losing stretches, because they will come.

## The realistic path

Start small, risk a tiny fraction of your account per trade, and treat the first stretch as tuition rather than income. Survive long enough to get good. Scale only once you're consistently profitable on a real sample — not after one good week. Most people who eventually make a living spent months learning first and never risked money they couldn't afford to lose.

## Why I show my own numbers

Because almost every claim about day trading income is second-hand — a survey, an estimate, or a figure from someone selling a course. So I publish mine: every session I trade, in points, win or lose, on a public record you can check. It's one honest, first-hand data point added to a subject where nearly everything is marketing. Whether *I* make a living at it, the record will show — and it'll show it whether the answer is yes or no.

**Notice.** Nothing here is financial, investment or tax advice, or a recommendation to trade. Trading carries a substantial risk of loss and most people who attempt day trading lose money. [Full disclosures](https://www.daytraderincome.com/privacy/).
