- Description: Paper trading is worth it if you treat it like real money. Here's what it actually teaches you, what it can't, and how to make the time count.

**Short answer:** yes, if you treat it like real money. Paper trading is the cheapest way to learn a platform, test a setup and find out whether you can follow your own rules. It's worthless if you trade huge pretend size, change rules every day, or hit reset after a bad session.

## What paper trading teaches you

- **The platform.** Order tickets, stops, brackets. You don't want to learn these with real money in a fast market.
- **Your setup.** How often it appears and whether it has an edge over many trades, measured by [expectancy](https://www.daytraderincome.com/what-is-expectancy/).
- **Your discipline.** Whether you can follow a written plan session after session. Most people can't at first, and paper is the cheap place to find out.

## What it can't teach you

- **Real fills.** Simulators fill you at prices you may not get in a fast market.
- **Real emotions.** Losing pretend money doesn't hurt the same way. Paper builds the process; it can't fully prepare your nerves.

## How to make it worth it

1. Use the size you'd really trade.
2. Write your rules before you start: a [one-page plan](https://www.daytraderincome.com/how-to-build-a-trading-plan/).
3. Log every trade in points.
4. Never reset after a bad day.
5. Run enough sessions to mean something. See [how long to paper trade](https://www.daytraderincome.com/how-long-to-paper-trade/).

## Where to do it

I paper trade every session on [TradingView](https://www.tradingview.com/?aff%5Fid=1173482&ref=daytraderincome.com) (affiliate link): the free plan has a paper trading account on real charts. Setup: [TradingView paper trading](https://www.daytraderincome.com/tradingview-paper-trading/).

Want the whole thing in order? My free course, [The Paper Route](https://www.daytraderincome.com/paper-route/), takes you from a blank TradingView account to 30 logged sessions on paper.
