- Description: Paper and live trading use the same chart, but fills, costs and emotions differ. Here's what changes when real money is on the line, and how to prepare.

**Short answer:** paper trading and live trading use the same chart and the same rules, but three things change when money is real: your fills get worse, your costs become real, and your emotions get louder. A good paper record is necessary, not sufficient.

## 1\. Fills

Simulators usually fill you instantly at the bid or ask with no slippage. In a fast live market, market and stop orders can fill worse than the price you saw. Expect a little less on every trade.

## 2\. Costs

Commissions and fees are off by default in many simulators. Set them on, so your paper results include [what day trading actually costs](https://www.daytraderincome.com/what-day-trading-actually-costs/).

## 3\. Emotions

On paper, it's easy to hold a stop and cut a loser. With real money, the same decision feels heavier. That's why people who are disciplined on paper sometimes start moving stops, cutting winners early or revenge trading. See [how to stop overtrading](https://www.flltlt.com/blog/overtrading/?ref=daytraderincome.com).

## How to close the gap

- Paper trade at the size you'll trade live.
- Use brackets so every stop exists before you need the courage to place it.
- Start live at the smallest size, like one [micro contract](https://www.daytraderincome.com/micro-futures-explained/).
- Keep the same log. Compare live results to your paper record every week.
