TradingView Stock Screener for Day Trading: A Free Setup

Short answer: open the TradingView stock screener, filter for price above $10, average volume above 1 million shares, a pre-market move of 3% or more and relative volume above 1.5, then sort by pre-market change. Check the news on the top names and keep three to five.

Open the screener

In TradingView (affiliate link), go to Products, then Screeners, then Stocks. To add a filter, click + on the top panel or press Shift + F, then type the filter's name. Click a filter to set its value.

The four filters to start with

  • Price above $10. Cheap stocks come with wide spreads and wild moves. Not the place to learn.
  • Average volume above 1 million shares. Busy stocks fill your orders near the price you see.
  • Pre-market change of 3% or more, up or down. Something happened overnight.
  • Relative volume above 1.5. At least half again more volume than normal for this time of day.

These are starting points, not magic numbers. Filter names can change; if one doesn't come up, type a word like "volume" or "pre-market" after clicking +.

Read the results

  1. Sort by pre-market change or relative volume.
  2. For each of the top names, ask why is it moving? Earnings, news and big analyst changes are real reasons. A big move on tiny volume with no news is a skip.
  3. Keep three to five and add them to your watchlist.
  4. After the open, watch which one is strongest against the market.

When to run it

Between about 8:45 and 9:15 a.m. Eastern, before the open. Run it again around 10:00 if you want a second look. Make sure the numbers have refreshed before you decide.

Free plan notes

  • The screener works on the free Basic plan. Extras like auto-refresh come with paid plans.
  • On the free plan, US stock quotes come from a Cboe feed in real time. It isn't every exchange's volume, so pre-market volume can look lower than other sources show. Compare stocks with each other rather than with a number you saw elsewhere.

Turn it into a routine

A screener is only useful if you run it the same way every day. Save your filters if your plan lets you, or write them down; it takes a minute to rebuild. Then practice picking stocks for a few weeks on paper. the Paper Route, my free course, covers the screener in lesson 6 and gives you 30 paper sessions to practice on. New to all of this? Start with how to find stocks to day trade.

Education only, not investment advice. The stocks named here are examples, not recommendations. Most people who day trade lose money.
